This study presents the gradual development of tourism and creation of tourist products before and after the establishment of the Świnna Poręba reservoir with the successive extension of tourist and recreational facilities, without the significant involvement of financial resources from the municipal budget but using the funds at the disposal of the local administration and farm holdings.

Opportunities for ecotourism development in the Magurski National Park and its buffer zone
Autor: Bernadetta Zawilińska
Strony: 157-168
Summary - read more..
The Magurski National Park lies in the central part of the Low Beskid (Beskid Niski) and is the youngest national park in the Polish Carpathians; it was established in 1995. It covers areas of remarkable natural features, attractive both because of their landscape and their historical and cultural aspects. These assets are used to only a limited extent. The region is scarcely populated and economically underdeveloped. After the Magurski National Park was established an increase in incoming tourism was seen, offering an opportunity for the development of the region, but at the same time creating a threat to its natural assets. To prevent this trend, only ecotourism should be developed, as its is friendly both to the environmental and cultural heritage of the area, while at the same time providing for the needs of tourists and a source of revenue for the local residents.

Dilemmas encountered in the development of tourism in a degraded town. The case of Chełmsko Śląskie (Schömberg) in Lower Silesia
Autor: Monika A. Murzyn, Krzysztof Gwosdz
Strony: 183-200
Summary - read more..
Using the example of a small Lower Silesian town, the authors verify a popular and widespread belief that tourism is a major development chance for many depressed settlements experiencing transformation problems in post-communist countries. Taking into consideration the specific case related context such as multicultural and peripheral character of the area, they discuss spatial, infrastructure-related, structural and mental barriers, underlining the dual character of most of them. The case of Chełmsko Śląskie confirms the thesis that considerable tourism values related to the town's built heritage or favourable geographical location are not alone sufficient to make the tourism function a pillar of the local economy. At the same time, external investors must be found, while intensive activities of local leaders and a change of attitude among the inhabitants are indispensable. Furthermore, the authors attempt to formulate proposals for overcoming the above mentioned barriers.
