Autor: Tadeusz Niedźwiedź, Krystyna German, Piotr Sadowski
Strony: 55-67
Summary - read more..
The paper presents meteorological conditions and the mechanisms of action concerning the occurrence of the tornado, which crossed above Orawsko-Jordanowskie Foothills and Nowotarska Basin on 29 May 2001. Apart from synoptic situation, a characteristic of satellite images showing cloudiness, thunderstorms and precipitation accompanying the tornado was presented, too. The cartographic and photographic documentation allowed determine the range and influence of the tornado, concerning both natural environment and technical infrastructure. Large areas of agricultural land were covered with garbage created by the tornado, which is a threat for the functioning of those ecosystems. The changes were classified with special focus on permanent ones, which stimulate further changes in the environment.
The relationship between temperature, cloudiness and precipitation at the time of rapid growth of the Cracow agglomeration
Autor: Dorota Matuszko, Katarzyna Piotrowicz, Robert Twardosz
Strony: 69-80
Summary - read more..
The paper presents attempts to identify a relationship between temperature, cloudiness and precipitation in Cracow in the period 1951-2000. The data include mean monthly and annual temperature, the number of days with the maximum temperature greater than 10oC and 25oC, annual and daily precipitation, the type of precipitation, as well as the overall cloudiness and the type of clouds. Close attention was paid to anomalous values. Since 1960s, the cloudiness and precipitation had followed a corresponding pattern as a result of the change of the cloudiness structure, probably caused by the increasing air temperature.

The day-to-day variability of air temperature in Cracow and its surroudings
Autor: Jacek Olejniczak
Strony: 93-103
Summary - read more..
This study examines an annual course in the day-to-day variability of air temperature in the centre of Cracow and its surroundings. By a comparative analysis of the variability of air temperature day-to-day changes in a city and in a non-urban area, an attempt was made to determine if urban build-up influences this variability and if so, what the magnitude of this impact is. Average monthly values and the day-to-day variability of air temperature were analysed. For the day-to-day variability, the frequency of changes of different value and sign were determined. Additionally, the day-to-day variability of air temperature was described for months with the highest and lowest temperatures. The project was based on daily measurements of air temperature (mean, maximum and minimum) for the period 1986-1995 from 5 meteorological stations (Cracow Botanical Garden, Balice, Libertów, Miechów and Gaik-Brzezowa).

Complex usage of forest as secondary subsistence in the Carpathians.A case study in Zawoja, Barańcowa, southern Poland
Autor: Yukari Nakadai
Strony: 115-127
Summary - read more..
The purpose of the present study is to analyze the common forest culture in the area of Carpathians through the inhabitants' way of relating to forests. Inhabitants in Barańcowa have turned to complex use of forest resources (wood, fruits, berries), that can complement local farming resources, and developed a dual system that enables them to retain self-sufficiency in face of various uncertainties. The use of forest resources as a secondary means of subsistence is given considerable weight and remains essential in alleviating the pressure of subsistence. Maintaining their traditions, respectful of the natural cycles of forest ecosystems, residents have developed a sustainable way of life, increasingly under the pressure of modernization.
